The presence of intrinsic remnant extracellular-matrix degrading proteases in glutaraldehydetreated bovine pericardium per se and in explanted bioprosthetic heart valves has been demonstrated recently by us. These enzymes were shown to degrade type I collagen and thus could contribute to a possible
