β¦ Synopsis
The idea of the present collection was born at a workshop on mathematical statistical physics held at the summer resort of Nor Ambert, Armenia, in May 1988. The workshop was organized by the Armenian Academy of Sciences and participants came from many towns of the Soviet Union as well as from Yerevan. The scientific program of the workshop mainly aimed at meeting the interests of the Armenian specialists in mathematical physics. Yet, by the joint conviction of the leading participants, the value of many lectures transcended these bounds.
It was decided to wait for one year before submitting the papers for the proceedings in order to have really mature material. With this issue of Acta Applicandae Mathematicae, this plan is now fulfilled.

A mathematical basis of quantum Mote Carlo methods is discussed using the exponential product formulas (Suzuki, 1966;Trotter, 1959) which have been generalized by the present author to infinite order (Suzuki, 1990). The investigation of this scheme has inspired the author to construct a new mathemat
