In this work, a recursive nonlinear feedback control law for the regulation of the outlet substrate concentration for a ®xed bed bioreactor with immobilized biomass is designed. The control algorithm is based on a reduced order model related with ordinary differential equations and only made use of

✦ Synopsis
This paper deals with the control of üxed bed bioreactors. The dynamics of these processes are described by a set of partial diþ erential equations, which are reduced to ordinary diþ erential equations by using a ünite diþ erence method. The task of this work is to demonstrate that a standard proportional-integral (PI) control law, which is based on the dynamics at the bioreactor output, can be used to regulate the operation of üxed bed bioreactors (eg, fermenters, bioülters, etc). The performance of the resulting control law is illustrated by simulation results on a üxed bed anaerobic waste water treatment process.
