Helium refrigerant in a rotating superconducting coil will suffer temperature and pressure increases from the action of centrifugal forces. The compression is shown to be isentropic in many practical cases, and some experimental evidence is given. Possible thermodynamic states of helium are describe

โฆ Synopsis
This report identifies properties to be considered when selecting materials used in construction of torque tubes for rotating superconducting field windings in electrical machinery.
The main design requirements are stated and the groups of material properties that influence directly the mechanical and thermal performance of a torque tube are derived.
Most desirable is a low thermal conductivity to modulus of elasticity ratio which governs the refrigeration expense and the tube wall aspect ratio (thickness/length). Numerical examples point out that fibrPreinforced plastics are potential candidates for use in torque tubes
Material selection for the torque tubes of large superconducting rotating machinery
A. Bejan
The use of superconductors in the windings of electric machinery, particularly in the rotating field winding of an ac generator, is regarded as a possible and immediate industrial application of superconductivity. The merits of this application have been stated in great detail. 1 The object of this report is to identify properties to be considered when selecting material used in construction of torque tubes for the rotating superconducting field windings in electrical machinery.
