The mechanism and performance of optical limiting in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and their metal oxide hybrids are presented. The mechanism of nonlinear absorption (NLA) in dispersed CNTs was an ''effective'' three-photon absorption arising due to sequential transitions between the real excited states.
