✦ Synopsis

A method for training a non-spatial matching to sample task in rats is described. The procedure uses standard stimulus projectors to generate visual stimuli which the rat responds to by nosepoking at the source of the stimulus. The procedure is analogous to that used with pigeons, monkeys and humans. Rats can learn the visual matching to sample procedure to a high standard, however, the introduction of even short delays resulted in a worsening of performance at zero delay, and a reduction to chance at delays above zero.
