✦ Synopsis
Two pairs of fiber-optic links are designed, built, and tested using directly modulated semiconductor laser diodes operating at a 1.3 m wa¨elength. Delays of 5 s are demonstrated, with a spurious free dynamic range of up to 115 dB r Hz 2 r 3 , a wide-frequency bandwidth of up to 6 GHz, and a pulse response of 120 ps, with ¨ery low pulse distortion. The matching characteristics of each pair are measured. Despite the fact that ¨ery different lasers are used, ¨ery good amplitude and phase matching of the fiber links is obtained. It is concluded that using the lasers from the same wafer would e¨en further impro¨e the matching, and would result in ¨irtually unnoticeable amplitude and phase differences between channels.
