✦ Synopsis

Lu et al.'s modeling of gas-solid reaction demonstrated the significant influence of mass transfer on the global transformation of consolidated porous reacti®e media with reacti®e gas at low pressure and low permeability. Their model coupled mass transfer with chemical kinetics at the grain le®el and heat transfer with mass transfer at the pellet le®el. The comparison between simulation results and recent experiments demonstrated

that the ®alue of the material permeability ®aries during the reaction process. This study presents the permeability decrease during the synthesis process. A correlation representing the nonlinear e®olution of permeability was identified for different reacti®e materials used for experiments. These mechanisms can satisfactorily explain both the experimental measurements of global ad®ancement and local temperature profiles.

While two-and multiphase flows find more and more application in chemical engineering practice, and the demand for theoretical information about mass and heat transfer processes in such systems is increasing, such data or at least experimental results which could be generalized are still lacking. The topic of interest in this paper is the behaviour of a dispersion model which embraces external gas-to-solid heat and mass transfer. Two methods of solution of transport equations-shooting technique and parameter mapping method are suggested. The effect of governing parameters on the occurence of
