โœฆ Synopsis

The recent communication of Karpenko and co-workers3 prompts us to disclose our related results 4 on a much wider variety of compounds. We have found that under standard mass spectrometric conditions', the molecular ions derived from a variety of 2- substituted adamantanes (1) undergo primary loss of X * or RX depending on the relative C-X bond strength (OK X l radical stability).

Cyclization processes involving nucleophilic participation of a remote double bond have been used to provide information on the mechanism of solvolytic reactions. (1,2) Such reactions can also be of considerable synthetic utility. (3,4) For example, McKervey
