โœฆ Synopsis

Direct liquid introduction negative ion mass spectra have been studied for some kirromycin class antibiotics. A scheme for the interpretation of the mass sju!&al fragmentation patterns is presented and shown to be useful for structure elucidation and novelty determination. Since these spectra are obtained by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry, antibiotic isolates need not be highly purified. However, where pure preparations are available confirmation of molecular weight assignments may be obtained with fast atom bombardment ionization.

a macromolecule which assists in peptide chain elongation. The specific mechanism of action of kirromycin has been studied in Literature reports of related antibiotics continue to appear5-' and the more general name 'ELFbYcin' is often used to d e ~r i b e antibiotics which bind EFTu in a way similar to kirromycin.

EFTu interaction is used as a target criterion for the

Oligosaccharides released from porcine thyroglobulin were first derivatised with 2-aminoacridone (2-AMAC) and analysed by capillary electrophoresis to determine the complexity of this glycan pool. N-Linked glycans were derivatised by reductive amination using N-(2-diethylamino)ethyl-4-aminobenzamide (DEAEAB, procainamide) and examined by electrospray mass spectrometry. This derivative ionised primarily by protonation of the tertiary amine group and attachment of an alkali metal to give [M H X
