✦ Synopsis

The ionization and fragmentation of SF 6 under electron impact has been examined by means of a trochoidal electron velocity selector and a mass spectrometer. The ionization efficiency curves of the positive ions were recorded and the appearance energies of different electronic states of these ions were determined. The experimental results were combined with auxiliary thermochemical data to evaluate the dissociation energies D °°(F 5 S-F) = 4.01 eV, D °°(F 4 S-2F) = 6.39 eV, D °°(F 3 S-3F) = 9.98 eV, the ionization energy of SF 5 , = 11.27 eV and heats of formation DH °f(SF 5 ) = 1.81 eV, DH °f(SF 4 ) = 4.12 eV, DH °f(SF 3 ) = 4.11 eV and DH °f(SF 3 ) = À 5.13 eV.

Analytically useful pentafluoro ketone derivatives of fatty acids are described. The gas chromatographic/ mass spectrometric characteristics of these new derivatives are compared with those of methyl, trimethylsilyl and pentafluorobenzyl esters. Pentafluoro ketones exhibit excellent chromatographic
