β¦ Synopsis
The detailed mass spectral fragmentation pathways of a series of both naturally occurring and synthetic %methyl-3alkyl-2-alkenylpyrazines have been elucidated with the aid of deuterium labels placed specifically in the alkenyl side-chain. The influence on the fragmentation pattern of the stereochemistry of the alkenyl group as well as the relative placement of the groups on the pyrazine nucleus have also been evaluated. This provides information of some diagnostic value in the assignment of structures by mass spectrometry to new compounds within this class.

The electron impact mass spectra of new 5-acetyl-4-aryl-6-methyl-2(1H)pyridones have been studied. A dominant peak in all the spectra is due to cleavage of the CO-NH bond of the amido group with charge retention on the carbonyl group. This fragmentation is followed by a hydrogen rearrangement to the
The major decomposition pathway involved in the fragmentation of derivatives of the title ring systems was the loss of RCN from the five-membered ring, except when this ring had a 3-amino, 3-hydroxyl or 3-mercapto substituent. In these cases, the exocyclic substituent and at least one nitrogen atom
