โœฆ Synopsis

In the characteristic mat-like communities of the seaweed Caulerpa, preliminary observations show that there is a positive relationship between the species diversity indices for the animals and the algae. Since some of the animals are obligate herbivores or otherwise related trophieMly within the community, they can be expected to contain some of the peculiar or toxic algal components and to vary in trophic biomass with the food biomass, at least when food is limiting. However, there is little relationship apparent between the biomass of the animals and that of the Caulerpa.

Trimethyl(carboxymethyl)arsonium zwitterion (arsenobetaine) is virtually ubiquitous in marine animals consumed by man. Experimental work on the transformation of arsenate to arsennbetaine in the marine environment is reviewed. Current evidence favors the conversion of arsenate to dimethyl(ribosy1)ar
