✦ Synopsis
I am deeply appreciative that this issue of Birth Defects
Research is being dedicated to my late wife, Marcy Speer. This picture fully depicts her everlasting spirit and remarkable capacity and love. The picture is of a middle school trip to Greece in late June 2007. Marcy helped organize the trip for our children and their classmates. I spoke to her daily during this trip. While traveling she was preparing reviews for her upcoming NIH conference. While traveling she was also working through a reorganization of the Center for Human Genetics at Duke where she served as the chairperson. During the trip she was finishing up research grant proposals. She was working and living life at a capacity that was remarkable for all of us, but routine for her. At this time she was still in remission and feeling good and strong. Once she returned home, the cancer returned with a terrible vengeance and she died on August 4, 2007. Her spirit lives on through the outpouring of love and affection from her family, friends, and colleagues. The world was indeed a better place for having Marcy be a part of it.
