Our patient is unusual, however, both because of the myoclonic nature of her startleinduced seizures and because a fourth stimulus, emotional tension, could also trigger these seizures. This stimulus has been observed to elicit the pathological surprise reaction . We confirm the effectiveness of valproic acid in the treatment of startle epilepsy [4).
