This is a long collection of contributions to two Dahlem Workshops held in January and April 1986 on the theme of resources and world development. In the past many similar conference collections have been disappointing, with papers of very mixed quality and little overall theme being apparent. It is, therefore, most gratifying to find that this collection is excellent and a most important contribution to the literature now developing on the relationships between resource use, development, and the environment. The book is organized into background papers, similar to journal articles, and group reports and, of the two, I found the former far more interesting since they contained much original material and argument, whereas the latter at times betrayed their origin in committee. It is a tribute to the authors of these papers, the organizers of the workshop and the editors that there is no article which
