The estimation of the roughness coefficient Manning's n for natural river channels (a requirement of hydraulic flow models such as HEC-RAS) remains problematic, particularly for rough, bedrock-confined channels. In the absence of a consensus quantitative method, the 'visual comparison method' of Barnes (1967) and Hicks and Mason (1991) remains a common technique for the estimation of this important model parameter. This website aims to canvas the widest possible spectrum of international expertise in the estimation of Manning's n, and compile results on a single reference reach from a bedrock-confined channel in northern Thailand. Website visitors are invited to inspect photographs of three cross-sections, and submit an estimate for Manning's n using the simple on-line survey form. Respondent (anonymous) data will be compared with a range of quantitative estimation techniques, and will be published. Engineers, surveyors, hydrologists, fluid dynamicists, geomorphologists, and all those with any experience in the estimation of Manning's n in natural river channels, are cordially invited to visit the website.
