Treatment of bcnzyl azide with triflic acid 0¢ titanium tetraehlotide effects 1,2-phenyl migration with concomitant fiberalion of nmleculat nitrogen. The resulting N-phenyl iminium ion intermediate readily combines with enolizable cad~onyl substrates to form Mannich bases.
