lntroduc tion

The telephone is a rapidly expanding technology in modern society as a result of technological advances and convenience of use. Health care organizations are establishing telephone services to provide general health care information, offer referrals for persons seeking a physiaan, give treatment authorizations, provide advice about symptoms, and reduce unnecessary visits. As a result, the telephone is becoming a major vehicle for making medical diagnoses, dispensing self-care recommendations, recommending treatments, giving test results, and offering reassurance.

In the inpatient setting, calls are often received from family members seeking an update on the condition of patients, from recently discharged patients inquiring about after-care, or from members of the public
