✦ Synopsis
The secretions produced by the cutaneous glands of mammals are generally considered to be involved in conspecific chemical communication, acting as pheromones.
From a review2 of mammalian chemical ecology it appears that, although the known mammalian pheromones are of widely differing chemical nature, only a few terpenoid compounds have been identified in cutaneous secretions.
