Abstract

The phenomenon of premature chromosome condensation (PCC) is induced in unstimulated horse lymphocytes, bovine spermatozoa, Chinese hamster ovary cells, embryonic chick fibroblasts and erythrocytes, Xenopus kidney and mosquito cells by fusing each of these cell types with HeLa cells blocked in mitosis. Thus it becomes possible to visualize chromosomes even from non‐multiplying cells of heterologous species, such as, chick erythrocytes and bovine spermatozoa.

The nucleotide sequence of 37 639 bp of the right arm of chromosome XII has been determined. Twenty-five open reading frames (ORFs) longer than 300 bp were detected, two of which extend into the flanking cosmids. Only two (L2931 and L2961) of the 25 ORFs correspond to previously sequenced genes (HOG
