✦ Synopsis

Size and variation in pollen samples were investigated in several successively selfed generations. A significant decrease in mean diameter of pollen grains accompanied inbreeding; also decreased variation in pollen size from individual plants was observed. Since loss of developmental homeostasis in the sporophyte could affect variation in the gametophyte, sporophytic characters were observed as a control. The main conclusion reached in this study was that pollen diameter is influenced by the gametophytic genotype.

The competitive ability of pollen from inbred plants in mixed pollinations in this study is not merely maintained but enhanced through successive generations of selfing. The data presented suggest two conclusions: 1) the possible existence of pollen-stylar interactions during successive selfings, wh

In order to measure differences in the pollen growth rate of numerous lines of maize and to investigate the main features of their genetic control, gametophyte growth was studied in vitro and in vivo. In vitro pollen tube growth of twenty inbred lines and seven hybrids was measured; a remarkable var

Seven wheat cultivars and one wild subspecies Triticum aestivum ssp. spelta were compared for their in vitro fertility and androgenetic capacity by studying their anther culture response and in vitro seed production. Both haploid embryogenesis and in vitro seed set showed very wide genotype dependen
