By an unfortunate chance, which was certainly not the fault of the Society or its Reviews Editor (or indeed, of the present Reviewer), the original Edition of this work (now known as Volume 1, and published in 1969) was not reviewed in these columns. Since "good wine needs no bush" it is reasonable to expect that this unintentional slight to a distinguished Past-President had no really adverse effect on publicity and resulting sales. The work was in fact reprinted in 197 1 and 1974, and has rapidly made a unique niche for itself in the literature of the subject.

In the unlikely event that a present reader is unaware of its existence, it may be appropriate to mention here that the 870-page Volume 1 consisted principally of monographs on more than 1,000 compounds, including chemical and proprietary names, synonyms, physical and analytical data, metabolism, doses and toxicity values. There were also valuable articles on analytical methods and tests, tabular data (e.g., Rf values and IR spectra), details of reagents, and
