An effective anisotropic t-J model for the ''pseudo-ladder'' compound CaCu 2 O 3 is proposed based on recent experimental studies and LDA band structure calculations. Superconducting pairing mediated by the exchange interaction in the model is investigated as a function of doping away from the antif
