✦ Synopsis

Nickel-iron alloys with a nickel c o n t e n t v a r y i n g b e t w e e n 30% a n d 100% can be m a d e highly anisotropic b y the following process. F i r s t the m a t e r i a l is rolled d o w n more t h a n 99% and recrystallised. B y this process t h e crystals all assume a definite o r i e n t a t i o n relative to t h e strip, so t h a t t h e whole n e a r l y b e h a v e s as a single crystal w i t h one axis parallel to the strip and one cube face in the surface of the strip (cube position).

If this m a t e r i a l is rolled d o w n again a b o u t 3 0 % a peculiar state is b r o u g h t about, c h a r a c t e r i s e d b y an u n u s u a l l y high m a g n e t i c a n i s o t r o p y in t h e plane of the strip.

T h e e l e m e n t a r y m a g n e t s all seem to be b o u n d to a position in which t h e y are p e r p e n d i c u l a r to the rolling direction.
