✦ Synopsis

We investigate a magnetic transition in the half-filled Hubbard model on the triangular lattice. By making use of the path-integral renormalization group (PIRG) method with a spin-rotated frame, we calculate the ground state energy and charge/spin correlation functions for a cluster with 36 sites. We find that as the Hubbard interaction is varied, a first-order magnetic phase transition occurs from a nonmagnetic insulating phase to a magnetically ordered phase with a 120 3 spin configuration.

In spite of numerous experimental and theoretical reports on LiNiO 2 , due to fundamental interest because its Ni 3þ ions form a triangular S ¼ 1 2 two-dimensional lattice, no consistent picture has emerged of the nature of its ground state. We have investigated the Li x NiO 2 system ð0:1pxp1Þ using
