✦ Synopsis


(\mathrm{KUO}_{3}) (cubic perovskite structure) was prepared and its magnetic susceptibility was measured from (4.2 \mathrm{~K}) to room temperature. It was found that a magnetic anomaly (magnetic transition) occurred at (16.8 \mathrm{~K}) and that this transition temperature decreased with increasing magnetic ficld. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum due to the (\mathrm{U}^{\text {st }}) ion in the paramagnetic state was not nbserved even at (4.2 \mathrm{~K}). The magnetic susceptibility and the optical absorption spectrum were analyzed on the basis of an octahedral crystal field model. The crystal field parameters determined are discussed and compared with those reported for other (f^{1}) compounds. O 1994 Academic Press, Inc.
