✦ Synopsis

Bulk densities higher than 101~ cm 3 and surface densities of about 1013 cm 2 have been obtained for spin-polarized hydrogen gas (H $ ) in experiments where a small fraction of the H ~, sample is compressed magnetically with a miniature field intensifier. Transfer of recombination heat from the pole tip is bottlenecked so that the compressed gas fraction warms up by a few hundred millikelvin above the ambient temperature of about 400 mK.
