β¦ Synopsis
The magnetic susceptibility and magnetization measurements were performed on the single crystalline CePd 3 S 4 . A steep increase of the magnetic susceptibility below T C ΒΌ 6.3 K is due to a ferromagnetic (FM) ordering. From the analysis of the magnetic susceptibility based on a crystalline electric field (CEF) model, the 4f ground state of Ce 3+ was deduced to be a quartet with an excited doublet situated at 1001 K. The experimental magnetization values were considerably smaller than the calculated ones that were computed by introducing a FM mean field as well as a CEF and the Zeeman effects. We proposed that not only the Kondo effect but also the suppression of magnetic moments by quadrupolar interactions is responsible for the unexpected small magnetizations.
