โฆ Synopsis
Amorphous aluminium-transition metal-rare earth alloys (AI-RE-TM) with compositions AI6~Gd15Cu2o and All Gdl Fel have been prepared by melt spinning. X-ray diffraction studies show the average interatomic spacing in these alloys to be about 7% greater than in fcc aluminium and about 20% greater than in amorphous AI TM-Si alloys. Thermal analysis measurements of the AI65Gd~ 5Cu2o and All Gdl Fel alloys show the crystallization temperatures to be 647 and 945 K, respectively. Magnetization studies show AI66Gd~ 5Cu=o to be paramagnetic with a localized gadolinium moment of 8.0 ___ 0.2 Pg' AI~ Gdl Fe~ shows ferromagnetic behaviour, with Tc = 275 K and a saturation magnetization of 124 e.m.u.g-~. A room-temperature 57Fe M6ssbauer spectrum of AI~ Gdl Fel shows a well-defined quadrupole doublet with a mean splitting of about 0.4 mms -~ . At 77 K, the M6ssbauer spectrum shows a well-resolved sextet, corresponding to a mean iron hyperfine field of 96 kOe.

Glass forming ability (GFA) of Nd 60 TM 30 Al 10 (TM = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu or Mn) alloys was studied. From X-ray diffraction measurement, highly textured Nd nanocrystallites are observed on the free surfaces of the Fe-, Mn-melt-spun ribbons, while the Co-, Ni-, Cu-melt-spun ribbons are fully amorphous. A
