Research into inland water goes back a long way in Magdeburg. Authorities and bodies responsible for waterways have been based there for a long time and are currently carrying out an unprecedented scheme to create Magdeburg waterway crossroads by bridging the Elbe with the Mittelland Canal using thrift locks.
