โฆ Synopsis
D esign is a kind of apprenticeship in which skills and expertise are acquired after learning basic techniques, assimilating domainspecific and general knowledge, and inspecting past good examples. The acquired expertise, however, is often tacit and implicit. Even skilled designers cannot articulate what kind of expertise they use in designing and how.

We describe the biocatalytic production of 3-phenylcatechol from 2-phenylphenol with the whole cell biocatalyst Escherichia coli JM101 (pHBP461). The recombinant produces 2-hydroxybiphenyl 3-monooxygenase, an enzyme from Pseudomonas azelaica HBP1. This enzyme introduces a hydroxyl-group at the C 3po
A new type of pin to be installed in the mixing section of a screw extruder is proposed based on the results of numerical calculation of flow field and local and integral mixing efficiency in the cross-section of a pin mixing section. Two problems presented in general by pin mixing sections, i.e. th
