Abstract
Dissolved hydrocarbons are effectively removed from ground‐ and process water by liquid/liquid extraction using a Macro Porous Polymer (MPP) System. The hydrocarbons transfer from water to a favored organic substrate, which is immobilized in the cells of a Macro Porous Polymer. Cleaned water exits the extraction column while hydrocarbons are retained in the extraction medium. The hydrocarbon‐laden extraction medium is regenerated in‐situ with low‐pressure steam, which volatizes the hydrocarbons but not the extraction fluid. Regenerated extraction medium is returned to water service. Extraction fluid does not leach into treated water. Volatized hydrocarbons are condensed and separated for disposal or re‐use. For relatively high mass loadings and rigorous effluent requirements, the MPP system offers lower operating cost than carbon adsorption and lower investment cost than steam stripping. Field data verify process performance and economics.
