✦ Synopsis

In the last decade, computerized data handling techniques have changed the experimental habit~ c f nuclear physics. The important role of digital paHern recognition methods is underlined.

The machine recognition and classification problems encoontered in particle physics are reviewed and t ompared with those typical of otl~er fields. Practical achievements are emphasized and an attempt is made to analyse them as part of thai body of knowledge normally collected under the I:eadings of "Panern Recognition", Some slate-of-the-art projects and outslanding problems are mentioned together with considerati.ms of possible future developments.
