Abstract

The data of Buchner and Kleijn on the flocculation of agar have been employed to calculate the lyotropic numbers of the formate and acetate ions. Hydration heats of the ions, comparable to those of Latimer, Pitzer and Slansky, have been derived from the lyotropic numbers. Other magnitudes, which have been obtained, include lattice energies and standard enthalpies of formation of formates and acetates.

Estimates of the standard enthalpies of formation of the formate and acetate radicals are quoted, and values for the electron affinities of the radicals are given.
