โฆ Synopsis
Lymphocyte activation and effector functions
Recognition of specific antigens presented in the context of MHC lies at the heart of the acquired immune response and results in lymphocyte activation. Activation of CD4+ T helper cells leads to the production of cytokines which stimulate other cells of the immune system. Activation of CD8 รท cytotoxic T cells results in the lysis of target cells and activated B lymphocytes are stimulated to produce antibodies. Lymphocyte activation thus plays a central role in the elaboration of the immune response but websites devoted specifically to mechanisms of lymphocyte activation and effector function are few. The following links point to useful resources on certain aspects of lymphocyte biology.
