β¦ Synopsis
Treatmentβinduced cancer is one of the greatest fears of patients receiving radiotherapy for breast carcinoma. Recent data suggest that radiation also may increase the risk of developing lung carcinoma. In their article, Deutsch et al. report rates of lung carcinoma development in 3515 breast carcinoma patients treated on the National Surgical Bowel and Breast Project (NSABP) Bβ04 and Bβ06 trials. These data are particularly valuable because both trials tested radiation as a randomized variable and both studies now have 20βyear outcome information.

## Abstract ## BACKGROUND The combined effects of thoracic radiotherapy (XRT) and cigarette smoking are not known with certainty, but they have important implications for lung carcinogenesis after cancer therapy in some patients. The authors analyzed smoking, radiation, and both exposures on lung
A series of 478 patients with T,.,No glottic carcinoma treated by irradiation is presented. Of these patients, 320 were previously untreated, whereas 158 patients were referred for treatment of a recurrence after receiving radiotherapy elsewhere. The primary recurrence rate in the previously untreat
Malignant neoplasms known to develop following external beam radiation include squamous cell carcinoma, osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, mixed mullerian tumors, malignant schwannoma, myelogenous leukemia and angiosarcoma. Latency periods of many years characterize the on
A pleomorphic liposarcoma arising in a site previously irradiated as a treatment for breast carcinoma is described. This case fulfills the criteria for a tumor to be radiation-induced. The tumor is localized with an irradiated area, there is a clear histologic distinction between the previous and cu
