โฆ Synopsis
We examine the overall behavior of a mixture in which nonuniformly coupled bimolecular reactions proceed at comparable rates. Using a regular perturbation method, we derive approximate equations governing the behavior of the reactant lump in a plug-flow or batch reactor. We show that overall second-order kinetics appear as the leading order and that higher-order terms can easily be constructed. With no more than three terms the perturbation series shows excellent agreement with the exact result. The result gives a simple expression for correlating experimental data. We also discuss how more complex systems can be treated by the present perturbative scheme.
