✦ Synopsis
Visible luminescence following XeC1 (Eph = 4 eV) and KrF laser (Eph = 5 eV) excitation of Ni(CO)4 is studied in cell and beam experiments. Excitation with yields 4 eV the well-known excited Ni (CO)3 fragment at all pressures and fluences up to 2 J/cm 2. Excitation with 5 eV yields Ni (CO)3 and two new features in the emission spectrum which are tentatively assigned to Ni (CO)2 and NiCO. Ni atomic emission is generated in a two-photon ( 10 eV) excitation process. For Ni (CO) 4 decomposition and atomic excitation at least 11.3 eV are required. Possible explanations for this conflicting energy mismatch are discussed.
