β¦ Synopsis
The luminescence spectra, lifetimes, and quantum yields of the cryptate-type complexes [Eu c 1 I'+ and [Eu L 213*, where 1 and 2 are cryptand-type ligands containing two 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) and one 2,2'-bipyridine-I,1 '-dioxide (bpy0,) units (1) or two bpy and one 3,3'-biisoquinoline-2,2'-dioxide (biq02) units (2), have been measured in H,Oand D,O at 77 and 300 K. The luminescence quantum yield upon excitation in the @and-centered bands is much higher than that exhibited by the previously investigated [ Eu c bpy.bpy.bpy I'+ cryptate. The role played by various radiative and non-radiative paths is discussed.

## Abstract The synthesis and spectral properties are reported of a set of four europium(III) complexes containing between one and four 3βazaxanthone sensitising chromophores. Each complex is based on a macrocyclic cyclen core. The emission and aqueous solution ^1^H NMR spectral properties are comp
