✦ Synopsis

Measurements on the luminescence of Cu + in single crystals of the perovskites KMgF 3 and LiBaF 3 are reported. The Cu + ion is in the site with cubic twelve coordination. KMgF3:Cu + is shown to be an interesting model system for investigating the optical transitions of the Cu + ion. In LiBaF 3 the Cu + ion is in the Ba 2÷ site. Charge compensation and/or an off-centre position disturb the inversion symmetry.
