โœฆ Synopsis

The luminescence of obelin is initiated by NaOCl in a reaction mixture containing no calcium. The addition of Mn2+ enhances the light emission >300-fold. Sodium azide and histidine, as singlet oxygen quenchers, inhibit NaOCI-activated obelin luminescence in the presence or absence of Mn". This suggests that the addition of NaOCl to the mixture causes singlet oxygen formation (stimulated by Mn2+ ions), and singlet oxygen initiates the light-emitting reaction.
