Abstract

Luminescence and energy transfer properties of the system Gd~1–x~Tb~x~OCl (0 < x ≦ 1) are reported, with special stress on those of TbOCl. Concentration quenching occurs above x = 0.15 at 300 K. Transfer from intrinsic Tb^3+^ ions to extrinsic Tb^3+^ ions and to rare earth ion impurities are observed. The emission spectra of TbOCl are dominated by trap emission, which makes a quantitative analysis of the intrinsic Tb^3+^ luminescence properties in TbOCl cumbersome.
