STM/STS studies have been carried out on the ( 110) and (100) surfaces of YBa2Cu3Oy single crystals with a superconducting transition temperature Tc of about 90 K. In most cases on the (110) surface, the spectra of the quasi-particle excitations in the superconducting state exhibit characteristics o

β¦ Synopsis
Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS) experiments on a high-density sintered MgB 2 surface were performed at 4.2 K, using a low temperature STM. The intrinsic superconducting density of states (DOS) was obtained in the tunneling spectra exhibiting the BCS-shaped characteristic with a metallic background. A double-gap structure, with the gap values of D L ΒΌ 9:5 meV and D S ΒΌ 4:0 meV, was clearly observed in the local tunneling spectra. The result supports the multiple-gap model in MgB 2 in the clean limit. The proximity effect was observed in the present conductance spectra and experimentally confirmed to be due to the Ar ΓΎ ion sputtering. The origin of the varied energy gap values reported in surface-sensitive STS measurements on MgB 2 was also discussed in detail.

Low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (LT-STM) studies have been performed on the LT-cleaved and the chemically etched surface of YBa 2 Cu 3 O y single crystals. We find that the vortex structure can be observed on the chemically etched surface of YBa 2 Cu 3 O y as a function of temperature
