Abstract
Photoluminescence measurements aimed at defining the precise nature of scintillation reported in paratellurite (TeO~2~) crystals [Coron et al., Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Res. A 520, 159 (2004)] are presented. Measurement results are discussed for TeO~2~ crystal samples (pure and Mg, Mn, Nb, Zr doped) studied for their photoluminescence properties in the 30β300 K temperature range and the nature of scintillation peaks reported on these samples is explained. Conclusions are drawn concerning the possibility to improve the scintillation yield of TeO~2~ crystals to be used as cryogenic bolometers operated at 10 mK in experiments studying the Ξ²Ξ² decays of ^130^Te.
