✦ Synopsis

The low-temperature catalytic oxidation of CO by O3 over a pure Pt ( 11 I ) surface has been studied over a range of CO :02 partial pressure ratios at a total pressure of 10 Torr. A marked variation in apparent activation energy with gas composition is found, with a pronounced minimum in the vicinity of the stoichiometric ratio (2 : 1). The results may be understood in terms of changes in the strength of M-CO and M-G bonding.
