Various mctnl ions. have been solwted by dimcthylformamide in the gas phase at conditions very similar to rfiojc of the quantum chcmial model calculaiions usually pcrformcd for the investigation of ion-solvent interactions.
Solwtes of Li, Nn, K, Zn and Cd have been identified by means oI' mass spectromctry, whereas Hg was fcund to give no inieraction with the solvent vnpour. Some characteristic dift'crcnccs between the behaviour of alkali and transition mcttils, rcspcctively, allow the postulation of possible different molecular structures of the respective solvates.
