Intermediate energy Coulomb excitation is well suited to study low-lying excited bound states in exotic nuclei. For the case of light neutron-rich nuclei in the rr(sd)-shell this technique permits the experimental investigation of excited states close to the neutron dripline with exotic beam intensi

โฆ Synopsis
Low-lying 0 + s t a t e s in e v e n -e v e n nuclei are discussed and correlated w i t h t h e i r shell structure. The merits of the h y p o t h e s i s of pair p r o m o t i o n as a possible e x p l a n ation for their occurrence are i n v e s t i g a t e d a n d checked for the 72Ge case. If this h y p othesis were true, the rate of 0 + -~ 0 + transitions would be a sensitive measure of t h e residual particle interactions. The conclusion can be d r a w n t h a t only a fraction of the internucleon p o t e n t i a l is active in the t r a n s i t i o n b e t w e e n the nucleons in t h e excited a n d g r o u n d states. The investigation of nuclei where 0 + s t a t e s m i g h t be e x p e c t e d could lead to b e t t e r f o u n d e d conclusions.
