Nitric oxide is generated from L-arginine by nitric oxide synthase (NOS), which has at least three isoforms; endothelial-type NOS (eNOS) and brain-type NOS (bNOS) are constitutive enzymes, and inducible-type NOS (iNOS) is expressed after stimulation. S-nitroso-N-acetyl-D,L-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP), a chemical donor of NO, inhibited serum-and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFCF)-stimulated cultured endothelial cell (EC) proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. The inhibitory effect of NO was reversible after washoff of SNAP-containing media.
