Overview: In Paris 1939, with the world on the brink of war, Helen Latimer, of a good English family and Max, a handsome, wealthy young German, fall madly in love. When Helen becomes pregnant they plan to leave France for neutral Portugal, but Max is kidnapped by his Nazi brother Hermann’s henchmen. Helen’s brother, Charles, persuades her to return to England while Hermann convinces Max she has had his child aborted. A devastated Max marries Margrethe, Hermann’s sister-in-law and, to avoid scandal, Helen marries Charles’s friend, Roland. However, Helen and Max are destined to meet again…
